CERVICAL CANCER AWARNESS

Did you know?

  • Cervical Cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths among women.
  • Early detection, particularly through a colposcopy (available at our facility), ensures that treatment can be minimal.
  • Cervical cancer is preventable, treatable, and often curable; especially when detected early. Here’s what every woman should know.

What is Cervical Cancer?

Cervical cancer begins in the cells of the cervix, the part of the uterus that connects to the vagina. It often develops due to persistent infections with high-risk types of the human papillomavirus (HPV). Regular screenings and awareness are key to combating this disease.

Who is at Risk?

Age Group: Most cases are diagnosed between 35–44 years. However, younger women, including those in their 20s, can also be affected.

Lifestyle Factors: Being sexually active increases risk due to potential HPV exposure. Smoking and a weakened immune system can heighten susceptibility.

Symptoms

Early stages may have no symptoms, making regular screenings vital. As the disease progresses, you may experience:

  • Abnormal vaginal bleeding (e.g., after intercourse, between periods, or post-menopause).
  • Foul-smelling or watery, bloody discharge.
  • Pelvic pain or discomfort during intercourse.
  • Advanced symptoms include severe pelvic pain, leg swelling, and fatigue.

Diagnosis: Detecting Cervical Cancer Early

At our facility, we use cutting-edge diagnostic tools:

Pap Test and HPV DNA Test: Detect abnormal or high-risk cells.

Colposcopy: A simple, minimally invasive procedure using a magnifying instrument to identify suspicious areas.

Biopsy and Imaging: Confirm the extent of the disease and stage.

Treatment Options

Cervical cancer treatment depends on its stage:

Early Stages: Minimal treatment like removing abnormal cells via cryosurgery, laser therapy, or a cone biopsy.

Advanced Stages: Procedures like laparoscopy or hysterectomy (partial or total removal of the uterus) may be necessary, alongside radiation or chemotherapy.

Why Early Detection Matters

Cervical cancer is highly treatable when caught early. Early-stage treatment is less invasive and requires minimal recovery time. However, advanced stages may demand extensive procedures like hysterectomy or even pelvic exenteration, significantly affecting quality of life.

Prevention and Awareness

Get vaccinated against HPV.

Regular screenings such as Pap tests and colposcopies are essential.

Adopt a healthy lifestyle, including safe sex practices and avoiding smoking.
